Review- THUNDERSTRIKE: YOUTH IN REVOLT

THUNDERSTRIKE: YOUTH IN REVOLT (Marvel, 2011; Softcover)

Collects Thunderstrike Nos. 1-5 and material from Thor Spotlight (cover dates January- May, 2011)

Writer: Tom DeFalco

Artists: Ron Frenz (penciler), Sal Buscema (inker), and Todd Nauck (back-up story pencils, additional inks)

This deals with Kevin Masterson, the son of the original Thunderstrike, Eric Masterson, who inherits his father's enchanted Asgardian mace and reluctantly becomes a hero. While this concept is not dark and gritty enough for modern audiences, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sorry, but I get an attitude with folks who write off traditional superheroes as outdated, especially when these character types obviously do resonate with people, proven by the showings of movies and video games.

This incarnation of Thunderstrike is the same that was seen in many MC2 titles like Last Hero Standing, etc. I am guessing that this story might not count in mainline Marvel continuity, but rather the now-divergent MC2 timeline. Or not. You be the judge.

The OCD zone- Typical trade paperback fare from Marvel. Nice laminated cardstock cover and a decent weight coated stock paper. I'm happy. Move along folks, nothing to see here...

  1. Was this a "I don't have enough to read" purchase?

    1. No, it was a DeFalco/Frenz purchase. I blindly buy everything that they do, since I know that I will like it.

  2. Judging by the cover alone, I would've never picked the book up. Would you buy a DeFalco/Frenz Millie the the Model HC from 1993?
