Review: Avengers Vol. 1

THE AVENGERS VOL. 1 (Marvel, 2011; Hardcover)
Collects Avengers Nos. 1-6 (cover dates July- December, 2010)
After all of the fumbles that writer Brian Michael Bendis has made in his career, he was bound to score a touchdown at some point...and what a touchdown it is! Dare I say it, but this may well be Bendis' finest hour. He finally figured out how to structure a tight yet sprawling 6 issue arc with a definite beginning, middle and end. Sure, his 'witty' banter and dialogue still annoy the piss out of me, but his idea for this story works. Bendis even writes Ultron as a wiseass...come on! Kang and Ultron are two of the greatest nemses that The Avengers have, and to get them both in one arc is fantastic. Add John Romita, Jr.'s excellent artwork and you have a winner, people. I am not one to heap praise on Bendis just for the sake of it. I am quick to condemn his failures, and I shall be equally quick in singing his praises this time. I am now seriously rethinking my policy of boycotting all Bendis products. Just when I thought that I could drop a few of these titles...Godzilla damn you, Bendis!
